The Jewish State Museum tells of the tragic story of Lithuania’s Jewish community. It is a government-funded project that collects, restores and exhibits Jewish spiritual artifacts and objects from the Holocaust. Comprised of five buildings, the museum hosts events and exhibitions and houses several centers.
The Tolerance Center, for example, is located in the center of Vilnius in a building that has been in Jewish hands for years. After World War I, the building served as a professional Jewish theater and cultural center. Prior to that, it was a cafeteria for free or cheap meals. It was transferred to the Museum in 1989.
Traditional Lithuanian Jewish objects and historical documents, including the original ark that was once part of Vilnius’s Great Synagogue, are displayed there. The museum also has paintings of Vilnius’s old synagogues.
