Both fatalities around age 20, medics say; driver apparently lost control and hit police cars that were parked at the side of Route 1 to carry out checks; 3 officers injured
Two young people were killed in a traffic collision outside Jerusalem in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning.
A driver apparently lost control of his car and slammed into three stationary vehicles on Route 1 near the West Bank settlement city of Ma’ale Adumim shortly after midnight.
The two fatalities were in the moving vehicle and appeared to be around 20 years old, the Magen David Adom emergency response group said. There was no additional information about the victims.
Medics declared the death of the two at the scene.
Images showed that at least one of the parked vehicles belonged to the Border Police and another to the police. The officers were carrying out checks on drivers.
A police officer was moderately injured, and a border police officer and two police officers were lightly wounded.
Police were investigating the circumstances of the collision.
According to the latest data published by the National Road Safety Authority, 34 people have been killed in traffic accidents since the beginning of 2023, a 10 percent increase compared to the same time last year.
