One man was critically injured Wednesday when a bomb planted under a car exploded in an apparent underworld assassination attempt.

Four others were lightly wounded in the blast, according to Channel 10 news.

Magen David Adom ambulance teams treated the wounded at the scene before evacuating them to the nearby Hillel Yaffe Medical Center.

Police say the critically injured man is known to have connections to an organized crime ring and suspect the attack was an assassination attempt, the channel reported.

Hadera is just one of a number of Israeli cities that has been plagued by underworld criminal activity.

Over the past year, several car-bombing incidents were carried out across Israel apparently by members of criminal gangs attempting to assassinate rivals.
