When is a chair more than a chair?

When it can be turned upside down and sideways, and each configuration offers a different kind of seating. One such multifunctional seat, created by a Jerusalem design student, has been chosen by Germany’s BILD Magazine as one of the five most exciting designs at the recent Room and Style trade show in Dresden, Germany.

The chair’s designer, Eti Kirshenbaum, a student at Jerusalem’s Hadassah College, set out to create a cathedra, a single-seat piece of furniture that could be multifunctional and usable in more than one position.

“It took many models and sketches,” said Kirshenbaum, who designed the chair as part of an industrial design course at Hadassah.

Her chair can be used as a rocking chair, beach chair, loveseat and as a regular upright seat.

It’s made of wood using computer numerical control technology that automates the cutting, welding and gluing process.

 

 

 

 

The chair is particularly good for small spaces, said Kirshenbaum. That’s a constraint familiar to many Israelis and Europeans.
