Umpqua Community College put on lockdown, shooter said to be detained
At least 10 people were killed and more than 20 wounded on Thursday in a shooting at a community college in Oregon, CNN reported.
Local police confirmed to AFP that shots were fired at Umpqua Community College but had no immediate information on casualties.
“We responded to a report of a shooting at the local community college and it’s a developing situation,” Officer Dwes Hutson, of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said.
The fire district reported there were multiple casualties but released no further details.
CNN, citing a county official, said the shooter had been detained. It said at least one woman was shot in the chest.
The college was immediately placed on lockdown.
In a tweet Thursday, the local fire district advised people to stay away from Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. The city is about 180 miles (300 kilometers) south of Portland.
Umpqua Community College has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the school wasn’t immediately returned.
