Canadian man said to be in IS faces terror charges

CALGARY, Alberta — Canadian police have charged a man they believe has gone to Syria to fight with the Islamic State with terrorism offenses.

Police said Thursday that Farah Mohamed Shirdon, 22, has been charged with participating in the activity of a terrorist group and instructing others to carry out terrorist activity, among other charges.

Mounties say the charges are being laid in absentia because they believe Shirdon is overseas.

A Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued and a notice will be issued via Interpol.

Police say Shirdon left Canada in March, 2014 to fight with IS in Syria.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Marlin DeGrand says Shirdon has served in a combat role, as well as recruiting, fundraising and encouraging others to commit violence for IS.
