Car swerves toward police in Jerusalem; terrorism ruled out
No injuries in incident near police national headquarters in the capital; driver and passenger arrested
A car swerved toward police officers waiting at a bus stop in Jerusalem on Wednesday morning in what law enforcement officials initially suspected was an attempted terror attack but was later ruled a driver’s error.
The vehicle almost hit the bus stop near the Israel Police’s national headquarters in the north of the capital, where the police officers were waiting.
After missing the officers without causing any injuries, the car sped away, police said.
Officers were able to trace the vehicle, and the driver, along with a passenger, were arrested.
Police opened an investigation to determine the motive for the incident and assessed that the driver had likely accidentally veered toward the bus stop.
Recent years have seen multiple car ramming attacks in Jerusalem and other locations around the country.
On Sunday, Hadashot TV news aired new footage appearing to shore up the assessment that a car ramming in the northern city of Acre almost two months ago was a deliberate terror attack.
The new footage seemingly contradicted driver Malik Yousef Nahar Asadi’s claim that his car hit two Israeli soldiers, a border guard, and a civilian on March 4 by accident.
