Coming soon: Spanish ‘Homeland’

‘Prisoners of War,” the Israeli television drama that served as the predecessor to the US smash hit “Homeland,” is set to invade the Spanish-speaking market.

Keshet International, the global distribution arm of Israeli powerhouse media company Keshet Media Group, announced on Wednesday a rare triple-territory sale of the television concept, which will see “Prisoners of War” remade in a Spanish-language version for Mexico, Colombia and the US Hispanic market.

The Emmy-winning “Homeland,” which was partly filmed in Israel, is now in its fourth season. Its first season hewed closely to the plot of “Prisoners of War,” which follows three released Israel POWs as they struggle to adjust to life in Israel after 17 years in a Syrian prison. This deal for the new Spanish-speaking version of the program will cover 70 episodes, and will be based on both the first and second seasons of “Prisoners of War.”

The deal will see a Spanish-language version of the show broadcast in both Mexico and Colombia, and will also grant rights to Univision, the US Hispanic network, to air the show on in its sister channel, Unimas.

Keshet International has brokered other deals for local adaptations of “Prisoners of War” – namely South Korea, Russia and Turkey – as well as distribution deals for subtitled versions of the originally show, which can now be streamed in on Hulu and several VOD platforms across Europe and North America.
