Dear Times of Israel Community member,
Please join us this Wednesday, April 28 for the next installment of our Israel Unlocked virtual tour series, exclusive to the ToI Community. This week, as we approach Lag B’Omer, the Jewish holiday celebrating the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, we will journey to the mystical city of Tzfat (Safed), the birthplace of Kabbalah.
Tzfat is the city of dreamers and believers who, upon their return to Zion in the early 1500’s after the Spanish expulsion, brought Rabbis and leaders to the onetime home of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai – the Rashbi. Tzfat and the mountains around it are the site where, according to tradition, the Rashbi wrote the book of the Zohar, which became the basis of Kabbalah.
Every year on Lag B’Omer, thousands journey to the Rashbi’s nearby grave to celebrate his story. Our expert guide Amy Ben-Dov will bring us on an exploration of the mystical synagogues and alleyways of the old city of Tzfat, tell stories of Kabbalists and mystics, and describe the legacy of the Rashbi and the great rabbis who followed him.
About our guide: Amy Ben-Dov immigrated to Israel from the U.S. and has a background in informal education with more than 25 years of experience as a tour guide and educator.
