The bodies of an Israeli man and a woman in their 80s were found Wednesday in an apartment in the West Bank settlement of Givat Zeev, just north of Jerusalem.

Police said they were investigating the circumstances of the deaths and were treating the incident as a suspected suicide.

Hebrew media reports said the couple both suffered gunshot wounds.

The couple planned the suicide to avoid becoming a burden on their family members, Channel 12 reported, citing a suicide note.

“We wanted to die like Romeo and Juliet,” the note said, according to the report.

The couple left individual gifts for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, labeling them all with the names of the recipients.

The man took his licensed handgun and fatally shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself.
