Ex-Mossad head: Give the PM latitude to conduct peace talks
Political pressure shouldn't factor into negotiations, Meir Dagan says
Former Mossad head Meir Dagan said Wednesday in a press conference that an Israeli prime minister should be able to make decisions about peace or war without the “grip of political pressure.”
In a Yedioth Ahronoth report, Dagan was quoted as saying “Israel is at a critical moment with great challenges at home and abroad, and minority political groups have the means to control the country and the majority are not heard… let’s change the system now and not wait for the government.”
The press conference was called by Dagan’s movement “Yesh Sikui” (“There is a chance”) to present his vision for governmental change, which includes limiting a prime minister to two consecutive terms and reducing the cabinet to 16 ministers. Cabinet members would be non-Knesset members and ministers would be prime ministerial appointments subject to public hearing.
The proposal would also raise the threshold for entry into the Knesset, making it harder for smaller parties to gain seats, and institute elements of a regional voting system that would allow some geographical representation in the Knesset.
