December music will leave Haifa ‘all shuk up’

An endeavor to bolster business, with live music trios every Friday in the famed Wadi Nisnas market

Live music comes to the Haifa neighborhood and market of Wadi Nisnas, with musical trios and ensembles set up among the stands of cucumbers and peppers, alongside the scent of fresh ground coffee.

Called Shishuk, it will take place at the shuk on every Friday — known as yom shishi in Hebrew — through December.

The series of concerts are sponsored by the municipality, the Beit HaGefen Arab-Jewish community center and the Ministry for the Development of the Negev and Galilee — which helps all areas considered peripheral — in order to bolster businesses in the local market and neighborhood.

Wadi Nisnas is made up of mostly Arab residents, and featured recently in Iris Zaki’s documentary film, “Women in Sink.”

The Shishuk trios and ensembles will change from week to week, beginning Friday, November 24 and performing through the month of December, playing from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., with a mix of jazz, swing, Arabic jazz, oud, folk and rock music.
