Dermer, Shapiro back Pats in Bowl

Ambassadors Ron Dermer and Dan Shapiro have not had much to agree about these past few weeks. However, the two were in lock-step over one thing: Cheering for the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

In a tongue-in-cheek Twitter remark, Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer said he was supporting New England during Sunday’s football championship.

Referring to the recent row over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s acceptance of an invitation to speak before Congress without consulting the White House, Dermer said he would “break protocol” and side with the Pats.

US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro, a Chicago native, jumped into the Super Bowl spirit shortly after Dermer’s remarks, tweeting his own support for the Tom Brady-led squad 46 minutes after his Israeli counterpart.

Shapiro, a graduate of Harvard and Brandeis, both located in the Boston metropolitan area, asserted he was still a Chicago fan but “[enjoys] seeing Boston teams do well,” except for the Celtics, a historic NBA powerhouse.

Dermer, who was born and raised in Miami, later reached out to the American envoy, sympathizing with the lowly state of his team.

“As a [Miami] Dolphins fan, I feel your pain (including that Monday night loss in 1985). But got to love Bob Kraft,” Dermer wrote, perhaps letting go of the fact that the Dolphins and Patriots are fierce divisional rivals.

Robert Kraft, the Jewish-American owner of the New England franchise, is a vocal supporter of Israel and financier of the Israeli Football League and Kraft Family football field in Jerusalem.

Lamenting the lack of success the Miami Dolphins have had in recent years, Dermer used a biblical reference to sulk over his team’s long drought without winning football’s ultimate trophy.
