Detainee found dead in his cell in central Israel
Police to probe reported suicide at Glilot station; reports say 50-year-old was arrested after breaking into apartments, stealing items
A man detained at a Tel Aviv-area police station was found dead in his cell on Wednesday.
Hebrew media reports indicated that the 50-year-old Rishon Lezion resident had taken his own life at the Glilot station in Herzliya.
Tel Aviv District police chief Haim Sargarof ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the detainee’s death, police announced.
His body was transferred to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute for further examination.
Reports said the detainee had been known to the police and was arrested earlier Wednesday after being caught breaking into apartments in Herzliya, with stolen items found in his possession.
In one of the apartments, the homeowner surprised him and fought with him. He injured her and stole a drawer containing money and other items, with cops apprehending him a short while later.
Hours later, he was reportedly found hanged in his detention cell.
Earlier this month, a suspect of attempted murder died by suicide inside the Ofakim police station. In that case, the detainee was a foreign national who attacked another person with a machete, seriously injuring him. Police were also probing that incident.
