Doctors wrongly tie woman’s tubes during C-section

Due to a file mix-up, doctors at the Barzilai Medical Center mistakenly performed a tubal ligation on a woman on Wednesday, a non-reversible procedure that rendered her unable to bear any more children.

The woman, who is around 40 years old, arrived at the Ashkelon hospital for a schedule Caesarean section to give birth to her third child. During the operation, the doctors — confusing her for another patient who had requested the measure — performed the surgery without her knowledge.

“I stood outside during the Caesarean section, the baby came out after fifteen minutes, my wife after 40 minutes,” Amnon Chen, the husband of the patient, said in an interview with Channel 2. “I was calm, everything was okay and we went to the recovery room. Afterwards, one of the doctors came over to me and bowed his head, apologized numerous times, and said that they had accidentally tied my wife’s tubes.”

“At that moment, my world was destroyed,” Chen continued. “I didn’t know how to deal with it.”

While the Chens have two other children, aged 6 and 10, they had planned to have more, he said.

“We are young. We had plans for the future that the hospital stole from us. It just ruined a lot of dreams and plans for the future.”

The couple plans to take legal action against the hospital for its mistake.

A statement from the hospital conceded that the doctors had erred, and said it had notified the Health Ministry of the mistake.

“We apologize for the incident, are investigating it, and support the family,” the statement said.
