Dozens injured at annual Tel Aviv Purim bash
53 require treatment for over-imbibing and dehydration, with 10 taken to the hospital; city hall puts turnout at street party at 60,000
Dozens of people required medical care and 11 were detained by police for questioning on Friday during the city’s annual street party for the Jewish holiday of Purim.
A total of 53 people required medical treatment for drinking too much alcohol or dehydration, 10 of whom were taken to the city’s Ichilov Hospital.
Police detained five people for suspected violence and drug offenses, as well as another suspected of selling alcohol to minors.
The Tel Aviv municipality said some 60,000 people attended the street party, which included DJ booths and food and beverage stands, among other attractions.
The holiday of Purim commemorates the biblical tale of an averted genocide of the Jews in the Persian empire some 2,500 years ago, and is a festive occasion celebrated with costumes, parades and street parties in cities around Israel.
