E. Jerusalem lawyer held for taking phone into prison
Attorney failed to report Palestinian-registered cellphone on his way to meet security prisoner at Megiddo jail
An East Jerusalem lawyer was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to smuggle a mobile phone to a security prisoner at Megiddo Prison.
The lawyer, 34, deposited his personal cell phone with security guards after he arrived at the facility for a meeting with a prisoner, and claimed he possessed no further mobile devices, Ynet reported.
However, after he underwent an examination with a metal detector, another phone was discovered in his inside pocket. The device was registered with a Palestinian phone company.
During his interrogation, the lawyer claimed he had forgotten about the phone. He was immediately taken into police custody. A remand hearing was set for Thursday.
The Megiddo Prison holds nearly 1,200 Palestinian security prisoners.
