Morrissey in meat, Auschwitz parallel

Supporting the meat industry and accepting the existence of slaughterhouses is akin to having a favorable view of the Auschwitz death camp, former Smiths front man Morrissey proclaimed, due to the mass murder of innocent beings during the meat production process.

“If you believe in the abattoir then you would support Auschwitz,” the notoriously melancholic punk-rocker said during a Q&A session late last week on fan site True to You.

“There’s no difference.”

Morrissey, a self-described “animal protectionist,” did more than just evoke the Holocaust in an attempt to discredit human carnivores, and asserted that meat eaters suffer from a perversion, similar to that of a pedophile.

“I see no difference between eating animals and pedophilia,” he wrote. “They are both rape, violence, murder.”

Long known for his unorthodox and often contrarian views, Morrissey also said he had no intention of engaging in conversations with meat eaters.

“If I’m introduced to anyone who eats beings, I walk away,” he quipped.

“Imagine, for example, if you were in a nightclub and someone said to you: ‘Hello, I enjoy bloodshed, throat-slitting and the destruction of life.’ Well, I doubt if you’d want to exchange phone numbers,” he said.

Morrissey is far from the first person to use the Holocaust to make a point about eating meat. PETA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — has used imagery from the Shoah in the past to illustrate meat-eating, including in 2003, with the “Holocaust on Your Plate” exhibition.

“The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent,” Anti-Defamation League head Abraham Foxman said at the time.
