Egyptian official denies claims that rocket fired into Israel came from Sinai

Israeli security officials not ruling out possibility that rocket came from Jordan

A senior Egyptian security official denied Israeli reports on Saturday that a Grad rocket had been fired from the Sinai Peninsula into southern Israel.

The official, speaking to Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm, said “the Israeli claims are intended to hurt the security situation in the Sinai and to influence the presidential elections.”

The rocket was discovered early Saturday morning north of Eilat, in the Arava region.

Israeli security officials are not ruling out the possibility that the rocket came from Jordan.

One security official speaking with seemingly intentional ambiguity said, “We know that terror has been swept into this region as a result of different processes, and therefore we cannot eliminate the possibility that the rocket was not launched from the Sinai.”
