Did the freshly elected Egyptian president extend an invitation to his Israeli counterpart? Based on his Twitter account it would appear so, but officials in Cairo denied the report.

At 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the following message popped up on Mohammed Morsi’s official Twitter account:

An hour later, two messages were tweeted closely together, confirming the invitation and saying a meeting between the leaders was to take place in August.

Egyptian officials said they were not aware of a letter sent from Morsi to Shimon Peres, and Israeli officials denied such a message was received, leading to suspicions that the Twitter account was a fake one or that someone had hacked into it. The series of tweets was among the first messages posted on the account, which was opened on June 28 and was being followed by roughly 3,000 people.

The Muslim Brotherhood has an official Twitter account and Morsi himself has an account on which he tweets in Arabic.
