Food bank launches ‘outsized’ exhibition

Leket Israel raises awareness about food insecurity in large-scale art show; 70,000 tins used in display

Leket Israel, a national food bank and food rescue network, has teamed up with the Ra’anana municipality in central Israel to launch an exhibit of large-scale items made from cans of food.

It’s Israel’s first exhibit with Canstruction, an international organization that exhibits annually in more than 150 cities worldwide in order to raise awareness about hunger relief, and has donated nearly 30 million pounds of food.

The 70,000 cans from Leket’s Canstruction exhibit were stacked into towers and rows by a team of curators and industrial designers to resemble a Leket truck, an open fridge and an enormous slice of watermelon, as well as other Leket food initiative tools. 

Once the exhibit closes, the cans will be donated to Leket’s 180 nonprofit partner agencies across the country.

The main goal of the event is to raise awareness about the importance of food rescue, minimizing food waste and giving back to the community, said Joseph Gitler, Leket’s founder and chairman.

Canstruction is on display at Park Ra’anana through Saturday, May 9. Hours are as follows: Wednesday, May 6, and Thursday, May 7, 10:00 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Friday, May 8, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 9, 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.
