Gipsy Kings break-off band to perform in Israel in September
Andre Reyes's band will bring Spanish and flamenco sound to Tel Aviv, Beersheba and Haifa
The Gipsy Kings by Andre Reyes — a break-off of the original flamenco-inspired Gipsy Kings band — will perform in Israel for four nights in September, with two concerts in Tel Aviv and additional performances in Beersheba and Haifa.
The concert dates scheduled for September 22, 23, 25, and 26, will include special guest singer Shlomi Shabat.
The original band, which symbolized and popularized Spanish music in the 1980s, is best known for the hits from their third album, “Djobi Djoba,” “Bamboléo” and the ballad “Un Amor.”
The band is a break-off from the original Gipsy Kings, founded in southern France in the 1970s by brothers Nicholas and Andre Reyes, sons of flamenco artist Jose Reyes, who teamed up with their cousins, Jacques, Maurice and Tonino Baliardo.
They first called themselves Los Reyes and traveled around, playing at weddings, festivals and in the streets and adopting the name Gipsy Kings.
The band later split up. Reyes’s older brother Nicholas is the legal owner of the name Gipsy Kings, which explains the elongated name of the current iteration, The Gipsy Kings by Andre Reyes.
