HBO gobbles up Israeli TV drama
Soap Beit HaMishalot, about a psychiatrist who makes client's dreams come true, set to get an American makeover
American cable network HBO acquired Israeli television show “Beit HaMishalot,” or House of Wishes, Israel Hayom reported Tuesday, joining a list of other popular Hebrew shows being reproduced for American audiences.
The drama follows a clinical psychiatrist who fulfills his patients’ fantasies, with a different client featured on each show.
The Israeli version is written and directed by Haim Bouzaglo, who was nominated and won awards for previous work at the Jerusalem Film Festival and Israeli Film Academy.
It was first screened on Channel 1 in 2013 and an additional season is currently in the works.
Bouzaglo will be joined by Doug Ellin of “Entourage” fame and Teri Weinberg (“Ugly Betty,” “The Office”) to produce the show in the US.
Other Israeli shows that received an American makeover include HBO’s “In Treatment” (“B’Tipul” in Hebrew), “Traffic Lights” by Fox (“Ramzor”), which was spiked after one season, and Showtime’s popular counter-terrorism series “Homeland,” based on the Israeli show “Hatufim.”
