Holiday attacks in Iraq kill at least 10, injure 20
Sticky bomb attached to bus carrying Iranian pilgrims; attacks in north target Shabak community
At least 10 people were killed and some 20 injured in attacks across Iraq on the second day of the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Iraqi authorities say that in the town of Taji, 20 miles north of Baghdad, a bomb attached to a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims killed five people, including a woman, and wounded nine others.
Police officials said that the so-called sticky bomb exploded as the pilgrims were heading to a Shiite shrine in Baghdad to mark the major Muslim holiday.
Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
In the northern Iraqi city of Mosul five people were killed in three attacks on the homes of the small Shabak community, members of which have asked to be annexed to Kurdistan.
Violence has ebbed across Iraq, but insurgents frequently attack security forces and civilians in an attempt to undermine the country’s Shiite-led government.
