In late victory over Clinton, Sanders wins Indiana
Democratic candidate takes over front-runner but Clinton has 91% of delegates needed to become first woman nominated by major party
Senator Bernie Sanders is the winner of Indiana’s Democratic primary, scoring a late victory over front-runner Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night.
Sanders, a self-declared democratic socialist, was ahead of Clinton by 53.2 percent to 46.8 percent with about three quarters of precincts reporting.
But it’s a win that won’t change the reality of the Democratic race.
The Vermont senator is far behind the former secretary of state in the delegate count. He won’t win by a large enough margin Tuesday to keep Clinton from collecting at least some delegates.
Clinton entered the night with 91 percent of the delegates she needs to become the first woman nominated by a major party.
“The Clinton campaign thinks this campaign is over. They’re wrong,” Sanders told AP after his victory.
