Iran’s foreign minister says world powers should come to Baghdad talks with ‘a constructive spirit’
In phone conversation with German counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi expresses hope the meeting would bear positive results as a step forward towards settlement of differences on nuclear program
Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle in a Saturday phone conversation that the six world powers that make up the P5+1 should come to the next round of nuclear talks, set to take place in Baghdad next week, with a constructive spirit, according to Iranian News Agency IRNA.
“We expect the other side to come to Baghdad with the same constructive spirit to ensure the success of the talks,” said Salehi.
Westerwelle who had called on Salehi, exchanged views with him on the latest developments in mutual ties, regional and international issues.
The two reportedly discussed preparations for the Baghdad talks and expressed hope the talks would bear positive results as a step forward towards settlement of differences.
US president Barack Obama said Saturday that the eight members of the G-8 are committed to continuing to place sanctions on Iran, while conducting diplomatic discussions with Tehran, in an effort to halt its nuclear drive.
“All of us are firmly committed to continuing with the approach of sanctions and pressure in combination with diplomatic discussions,” he told reporters covering the summit at the presidential retreat in Camp David.
“And our hope is that we can resolve this issue in a peaceful fashion that respects Iran’s sovereignty and its rights in the international community, but also recognizes its responsibilities,” Obama added.
