Israeli tennis champ defeats Bosnian in Olympic round 1
After 6:4, 6:4 win, Dudi Sela faces higher-ranked players, either from Belgium or Australia, in next round
Israeli tennis champ Dudi Sela defeated Bosnian Damir Dzumhur 6:4, 6:4 and went on to the second round of the Olympics tennis championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The match lasted 1.5 hours.
It included a strange five-minute pause when Dzumhur stopped playing and said he was being cursed from the sparsely-populated stands. The statement led the Bosnian’s coach to turn to the stands and begin to shout at the fans while Sela waited quietly for the incident to pass.
In both sets, Sela took the lead early in the first half, and kept it easily against his lower-ranked rival.
In the next round, Sela, ranked 65th overall in the world, will face the winner of the match between Belgium’s David Goffin, ranked 13th, or Australia’s Sam Groth.
Both are considered tougher contenders than Dzumhur, who is ranked 76th.
Forty-seven athletes are part of Israel’s team at the Rio Olympics, the country’s largest delegation ever. They are competing in 15 sports.
