Israel poked fun at Iranian threats to destroy it on Monday, replying to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei with an animated GIF on Twitter.
Khamenei lashed out at Israel in a series of tweets, calling the Jewish state the “cancerous tumor” of the region that must be “removed and eradicated.”
The Israeli Embassy in Washington replied with a GIF asking, “Why are you so obsessed with me?” featuring Rachel McAdams in the 2004 movie “Mean Girls.”
The American teen comedy portrays high school social cliques and their damaging effects.

The Israeli consulate in New York also appeared unfazed by the Iranian leader’s threat:
Anyone who continues to support a deal with #Iran that enables this genocidal regime to obtain nuclear weapons should be made to rewrite this tweet from its Supreme Leader 100 times on a blackboard, Bart Simpson style.#GreatReturnMarch #IranDeal #Israel https://t.co/mAsg6x4buQ

They were responding a day after a series of tweets in which Khamenei leveled harsh criticism at Israel for its handling of the violent Hamas-orchestrated “March of Return” protests along the Gaza border.
“Our stance against Israel is the same stance we have always taken,” he said. “#Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated: it is possible and it will happen.”

Khamenei has previously branded Israel as “barbaric,” “infanticidal,” and the “sinister, unclean rabid dog of the region.” More recently, he blamed “Zionists” for the anti-government demonstrations held across Iran earlier this year.
