Man shot twice in the head in Tel Aviv attack goes home, with bullet
Assaf Bar, 27, will make full recovery; doctors have removed one bullet, are leaving the other in his skull
An Israeli shot twice in the head in the Tel Aviv terror attack last week was released from the hospital on Tuesday and was expected to make a full recovery.
Assaf Bar, 27, a Haifa resident, was one of the first people injured at the Sarona complex on Wednesday night. Four Israelis were killed in the terror attack, carried out by two Palestinian relatives from the West Bank village of Yatta at the Sarona Market.
Doctors have decided not to remove one of the bullets from Bar’s head, which penetrated some 2 centimeters (less than one inch) from the back, and was not posing an immediate danger to his life, the Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported on Tuesday. The other bullet, which entered behind his ear, was extracted in surgery immediately after the attack.
Bar was in good condition post-surgery, and on Tuesday, he was discharged, according to the Walla news website.
Bar, who has been conscious and has spoken to the press since the attack, said he has “some headaches and problems hearing, but every day I feel a little stronger and hope to keep up that pattern.”
Bar had finished eating dinner with his girlfriend at the time of the attack, and had picked up the check and was set to leave when the terrorists opened fire.
Speaking from the Ichilov Hospital on Monday night, Bar slammed the government for failing to curb the wave of terror attacks.
“I refuse to accept the situation in this country, in which innocent [people] are murdered and there are no efforts to prevent this,” he said. “I’m sick of losing every month [people] that are dear to me,” he said.
Bar’s mother died several weeks ago of cancer. On Monday night, his father told Hebrew media “we thought we would be thrust back into the mourning cycle again, but thank God we’re standing here with Assaf.”
“It’s hard to describe those moments, from the second we heard our dear Assaf was hurt until we saw him — it was an eternity,” Avner Bar said, according to the Walla news website.
Forty-two-year-old Ido Ben Ari from Ramat Gan, 39-year-old Ilana Naveh from Tel Aviv, 58-year-old Michael Feige from Ramat Gan and 32-year-old Mila Mishayev from Rishon Lezion were killed in Wednesday’s attack. Sixteen others were injured.
