Israeli swimmer Anastasia Gorbenko wins historic gold at European Championships

Gorbenko, 17, completes race in 2:09.99, is first Israeli woman to win gold in the competition; she will also compete in Tokyo Olympics

Israeli swimmer Anastasia Gorbenko made history Saturday, winning a gold medal at the European Championships taking place in Budapest.

Gorbenko, 17, came in first in the 200-meter individual medley, completing the swim in 2 minutes, 9 seconds and 99 milliseconds.

She was followed by Brit Abbie Wood and Hungarian Katinka Hosszu.

Gorbenko’s medal is the first gold for an Israeli woman in the European Championships, and the second overall.

Gorbenko will compete in the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

In 2018 Gorbenko won the gold at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, with a result of 2:12.88 in the women’s 200-meter individual medley, a result she improved upon on Saturday.
