Israeli tennis star eliminated from US Open
Julia Glushko loses to Slovakian player Daniela Hantuchova in third round
Israeli tennis player Julia Glushko’s run in the prestigious US Open was cut short Saturday, when she was defeated by veteran Slovakian competitor Daniela Hantuchova, ranked 43rd, in the tournament’s third round.
Glushko, who started off strong with a first set 6-3 win, lost the match’s two final sets 7-5 and 7-6, respectively.
Previously in the tournament, Glushko, who had never in her career won a WTA tour-level match beforehand, beat 18-year-old American Sachia Vickery in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round.
In the first round of the tournament on Tuesday night, the 138th ranked Glushko defeated Russia’s Nadia Petrova, ranked 23 in the world, 6-3, 6-4.
Israeli representatives were also disappointed in the men’s doubles games, as Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich were eliminated in the second round, losing to Yen-Hsun Lu of Thailand and Divij Sharan of India.
The Israeli duo lost 6-4 in the first set, but went on to come back from trailing 5-4 in the second set, to take it 7-5.
Ram and Erlich’s luck did not hold up, however, with the pair losing 7-2 in the final set.
