Jaffa resident shot dead in 2nd suspected murder in Arab community this year
Mahran Abu Seif, 39, died after taking himself to the hospital in critical condition; police say 18-year-old suspect arrested
A 39-year-old resident of Jaffa was seriously wounded in a shooting late Sunday night, succumbing to his wounds on Monday.
Mahran Abu Seif arrived on his own at Wolfson Medical Center in Tel Aviv shortly before midnight in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound, Hebrew media reported.
Police have opened an investigation into the suspected murder.
Police said an 18-year-old resident of Jaffa was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of involvement in the murder. He was set to be brought before the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court for a remand hearing during the day.
Abu Seif’s death is the second murder in Israel’s Arab community this year, amid an epidemic of violence that has been gripping it for years, with activists blaming police inaction.
The Abraham Initiatives, which monitors and campaigns against violence in the Arab community, tallied 116 Arabs killed in apparent homicides in Israel in 2022. In 2021, 125 Arabs were killed in Israel in community violence — an all-time record, topping what had previously been the all-time high of 96, set in 2020.
