Jerusalem building collapse injures two
Contractor detained for questioning
The top floor of a Jerusalem apartment building undergoing renovation collapsed on Monday, injuring two men. The incident took place in the Geula neighborhood.
One man reportedly suffered a fractured leg from falling masonry and was rushed to Shaare Tzedek Medical Center for treatment, and another was reported to have received light injuries. Firefighters searched the building for additional victims trapped after the fall, but there were no other casualties, according to Walla News.
Shmulik Friedman, Jerusalem fire department commander, told Ynet News that they had not yet determined how the accident had occurred, but said that the rest of the building could collapse at “any second.”
The collapse attracted hundreds of onlookers, which required a police presence for crowd control. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat also arrived on the scene to inspect the damage.
Police said they have detained the contractor in charge of the renovations for questioning.
