A 33-year-old Jerusalem man was indicted Tuesday for making threats against US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides.

According to a copy of the indictment cited by the Walla news site, the man arrived Monday night at Chakra, a restaurant in the capital where Nides was dining, and asked the envoy’s security guards if he was there.

After a guard said he couldn’t answer the question for security reasons, the man allegedly answered: “That’s a shame, I’ve been sent to assassinate the US ambassador.”

He was promptly arrested, and an indictment was filed less than 24 hours later.

It was not clear how the man knew Nides was at the restaurant or whether there is a suspected motive.

There was no comment from the ambassador or the US Embassy on the incident.
