Katzrin man accused of killing cats with ax, eating them
Bloody shoes and dismembered cat parts found in suspect's fridge; police say 45-year-old hacked animals to death for 'his own pleasure'
A resident of the northern town of Katzrin was arrested Wednesday on suspicion that he killed and ate a number of cats, police said in a statement.
Other residents of city in the Golan Heights had called police earlier in the day to report a “strong odor of cats.”
When officers arrived in the area, they determined the smell was emanating from the home of the 45-year-old suspect.
A search of his house yielded an ax that police believe he used to hack the cats to death. Police also found bloody shoes, and cat parts — including skin and fur — inside his refrigerator.
The suspect was arrested and was slated to be brought before the Kiryat Shmona Magistrate’s Court later in the day for a remand hearing.
Police did not indicate how many animals they believe the suspect killed and ate.
The penalty for certain animal cruelty-related offenses in Israel is up to a three-year jail term.
