Likud MK’s grandfather dies at ballot booth
90-year-old relative of Ze'ev Elkin collapses after casting vote in Jerusalem
The 90-year-old grandfather of senior Likud MK Ze’ev Elkin died on Tuesday while leaving a Jerusalem polling station, The Times of Israel learned.
The elderly man collapsed and hit his head after casting his vote in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood in the capital.
Paramedics at the scene unsuccessfully attempted to revive him.
The man was not immediately named, but his identity was confirmed to The Times of Israel.
Elkin, number eight on the Likud slate, is a former deputy foreign minister and chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
Elkin served in the Kadima party 2006-2009, and later moved to Likud. He immigrated to Israel from the Soviet Union in 1990.
The election day kicked off on Tuesday morning, with a 26.5 percent turnout rate by noon.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party is battling with Isaac Herzog’s Zionist Union for the premiership, in what is predicted to be a tight race.
