Report: Israel asked US to join military campaign against Iran, but US rejects request

Israel has urged the United States over the past two days to join its newly launched military campaign against Iran, but the US is currently not considering such a move, reports Axios, citing Israeli and American officials.

In the past 48 hours, Israel asked US President Donald Trump’s administration to join its attack against the Islamic Republic’s nuclear and military sites, two Israeli officials told the news site.

A US official confirmed Israel’s request and said the Trump administration is not currently considering joining the conflict, the report reads.

Israel seeks American assistance primarily to destroy Iran’s underground Fordo uranium enrichment site, which may be beyond Israel’s military capabilities to do alone, says the report.

A senior White House official told Axios today that “Whatever happens” with Israel’s strikes on Iran “cannot be prevented…But we have the ability to negotiate a successful peaceful resolution to this conflict if Iran is willing. The fastest way for Iran to accomplish peace is to give up its nuclear weapons program,” the report continues.

Axios reported earlier that Trump recently told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US would consider striking the Fordo site if such a move would become necessary to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, citing Israeli officials.

The White House has officially denied that Trump is considering any US strike on Iran, stating that now is not the time to launch an attack.

Similarly, Channel 12’s Amit Segal says an Israeli political source told him, “Israel is not ruling out the possibility of eliminating Ali Khamenei, but it depends on many things.”

The official speaking to the WSJ further states that “the war would only end either with Iran voluntarily dismantling its nuclear program or Israel making it impossible for Tehran to reconstitute it.”

In a video exchange posted on X by Channel 13’s Raviv Drucker, one of the protesters can be heard arguing with a security guard through an intercom, telling him that under the law members of the public must be allowed in when an air raid alert goes off — and claiming that he and his compatriots had received prior permission to do so.

“There’s going to be missiles soon, we’re on the street,” the protester says.

The guard replies that only ministry employees may enter, prompting the man to counter that the guard was “endangering my life.”

“Here comes the missile above me, I see it,” the protester says.

No damage has been seen at Iran’s Fordo Fuel Enrichment Plant or the Khondab heavy water reactor under construction, the UN nuclear watchdog says.

Israel previously denied reports it struck Fordo.

The International Atomic Energy Agency adds that no further damage has been observed at Natanz, the site of one of the nuclear targets struck on Friday by Israeli forces.

Earlier, the IAEA said that Iran’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority had informed it of no change in off-site radiation levels in Isfahan, another nuclear site targeted by Israel in an air offensive. The IAEA also said that four critical buildings at the Isfahan nuclear site had been damaged, including a uranium conversion facility and a fuel plate fabrication plant.

“As in Natanz, no increase in off-site radiation expected,” the agency said in a post on X.

Far-right minister tweets and deletes post slamming IDF reservists who refuse to serve, amid Iran missile attack

Amid missile attacks from Iran, far-right Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu tweets and deletes a post on X slamming IDF reservists who refuse to serve.

“I sent this photo to the attention of one of the pilots who led the IDF’s refusal movement,” he writes in a now-deleted tweet, describing an attached image as showing “a squadron commander who attacked in Iran. Kippah sticking out, back straight, true heroism.”

“I asked him a simple question: Does he think it’s possible to win a war — certainly with Iran — with the spirit of refusal that he was a part of? I also asked if he still thinks we were wrong when we expelled from the force those who chose to abandon their brothers during combat. I was hoping to hear a word of regret. He didn’t really respond,” Eliyahu writes.

This March, an Israeli Air Force reservist navigator was “permanently” dismissed from the military after he posted on social media that he would not show up for reserve duty because of the resumption of fighting in the Gaza Strip. While the incident was seen as isolated, it harked back to the widespread anti-government protests in recent years, when hundreds of reservists threatened not to show up for duty, including many in the Air Force.

In April, a group of close to 1,000 veterans of the Israeli Air Force, the vast majority of them in retirement, published a letter demanding the return of the hostages in Gaza, even if it comes at the cost of ending the war against Hamas entirely.

After the letter was published, the military moved to dismiss every active duty reservist who signed it, saying soldiers cannot use the “Israeli Air Force brand” to protest political matters.

The letter did not call for a general refusal to serve, as had been previously reported, but instead urged the government to prioritize the release of hostages over the continuation of the war in Gaza, which the signatories argued now serves “political and personal interests” rather than national security.

After pausing its activities for a day on orders from the IDF, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says it currently plans to operate all three of its aid distribution centers in the Gaza Strip tomorrow.

The Israeli- and US-backed group says in a Facebook update it will begin distributing food to Palestinians in the war-torn strip at noon on Sunday.

“Precise timing and instructions are being communicated to the local population directly as updates are available, given this is a highly dynamic operating environment,” a GHF spokesman adds.

Several people gather in person for a rally at the Shaar Hanegev intersection in southern Israel, following IDF Home Front Command directives in which there can be no public gatherings during the ongoing situation with Iran.

About one thousand people join a larger virtual Zoom, lighting torches in memory of the two hostages whose bodies were recovered this week from Gaza, and are joined by Lishay Miran Lavi, wife of hostage Omri Miran, Liran Berman, brother of twins Gali and Ziv Berman, and Noam Katz Rudaeff, daughter of Lior Rudaeff, who was killed and his body taken hostage.

The hostages’ families remark that it is more difficult now to keep the hostages at the heart of the public agenda.

This past weekend was turbulent for all of us in the State of Israel,” says Miran Lavi. “It emphasized to me how much Roni and Alma’s father is missed, and how at every single moment we need him, they need him.”

Liran Berman says that these are not easy days, as Israel is surrounded by threats from the outside, but even with the major, dramatic and historic war taking place, the hearts of the hostage families don’t stop worrying.

“Today more than ever, it’s difficult to keep the hostages at the heart of the public agenda,” says Noam Katz Rudaeff. “The screens are filled with headlines — but we barely see their faces there. We barely hear their names. Some are deteriorating. Some are disappearing.”

All three hostage family members call to bring the hostages home.

Three activists from the Madleen boat, which tried to break Israel’s blockade against Gaza earlier this week, are seeking to return home via Jordan, due to the ongoing closure of Ben Gurion Airport resulting from the current conflict with Iran.

The activists were scheduled to be deported on Friday, but their flights were canceled due to Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites in the early hours of Friday morning.

The three activists are Marco van Rennes of The Netherlands, Pascal Maurieras of France, and Yanis Mhamdi also of France. They have been in custody at Givon Prison in Ramle under the Israel Prison Service (IPS) authority since Tuesday.

Lawyers of the Adalah civil rights group, who are representing the activists, sent an urgent letter to Israeli authorities earlier today requesting that the activists be permitted to exit the country via Jordan, to return to their home countries from there.

Some international flights have resumed from Amman.

“Their continued detention is unlawful and a part of Israel’s ongoing violations of international law,” says Adalah.

Four activists were deported on Tuesday after they waived their rights to challenge their detention before a judge, while another five activists were deported on Thursday after the Detention Review Tribunal court rejected their claims.

(Jean-Philippe Ksiazek/AFP)

Three French teenagers have been sentenced for the gang rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl in 2024 outside Paris.

Two teenagers, aged 13 at the time of the attack, have been sentenced to nine and seven years in prison on Friday, according to the ruling at the juvenile court in Nanterre, a Paris suburb. The third, the ex-boyfriend of the girl who was 12 at the time, was also found guilty, but could not be sentenced to jail time due to his age. He will be placed in closed foster care for five years, according to reports.

All three boys were charged with sexual assault on a minor as well as recording and sharing sexual images, aggravated by being committed on religious grounds.

The evidence clearly showed that the girl would not have been raped if she were not Jewish, the judge says.

On June 15, 2024, the girl was allegedly approached by the three boys in a park near her home in the northwestern Paris suburb of Courbevoie, close to the La Defense financial district.

She was dragged into a shed where the suspects beat her and “forced” her to have sex while uttering death threats and antisemitic remarks,” according to police reports.

The incident sparked outrage throughout France, with hundreds taking to the streets to protest after the attack. The year-long delay to prepare for the trial has added to the Jewish community’s anger as antisemitism in France continues to skyrocket.

Antisemitism in France has reached historic levels since Hamas launched its war against Israel on October 7, 2023. The country saw nearly 1,570 antisemitic acts in 2024 and a record 1,676 in 2023, according to the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF), an umbrella body of French Jewish groups.

Man shot dead in northern Arab village

A 24-year-old man was shot dead this evening in the northern Arab village of Barta’a, police and paramedics say.

The victim was a resident of the coastal town of Jisr az-Zarqa who was attending a wedding in the village, according to local Arabic-language media. He was taken in critical condition to the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, where hospital staff pronounced him dead.

Police have opened an investigation into the shooting. They have not yet arrested any suspects.

Since the start of 2025, 114 Arab Israelis have been killed in violent incidents, in a surging crime wave which many Arab community leaders complain goes unaddressed by police.

Law enforcement also opened an investigation into another shooting incident that critically wounded a man and his wife in Shfaram today. Paramedics took the married couple, both in their 40s, to Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center for treatment.

Internet service returns to Gaza after three-day blackout

The internet is back up in the Gaza Strip, the head of the Palestinian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority tells AFP, after a three-day blackout blamed on Israel’s military.

“The network is up now in all of the Gaza Strip,” the telecom agency’s CEO Laith Daraghmeh says, after the Palestinian Authority’s telecommunications ministry had reported internet and fixed-line communications were down as Israeli forces on Thursday targeted a fiber optic cable, a claim Israel has not commented on.

Yevgenia Blinder named as victim in Iranian missile barrage

Yevgenia Blinder is named as one of the three people killed in Iran’s overnight ballistic missile attack on Israel.

She was killed in a barrage on the central city of Rishon Lezion early this morning, as was Yisrael Aloni, 73, whose death was announced earlier today.

Blinder, who was in her 60s, worked as a caregiver in the house next to Aloni’s in Rishon Lezion, Hebrew outlets report.

Last night, Etti Cohen Engel, in her 60s, was critically wounded in an earlier missile strike on Ramat Gan. She later died of her injuries.

In addition to the three people killed, some 70 people were wounded by the approximately 200 ballistic missiles fired from Iran.

United States President Donald Trump recently told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US would consider striking Iran’s underground Fordo nuclear facility if such a move would become necessary to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, Israeli journalist Barak Ravid tells Channel 12.

According to Israeli officials cited by Ravid, Trump conveyed this message to Netanyahu in phone calls over the past several weeks. The Fordo facility may be beyond Israel’s military capabilities to destroy without outside assistance, he adds.

However, Ravid added that the White House has officially denied that Trump is considering a US strike, stating that now is not the time to launch an attack on Iran.

The issue will be a critical issue in the coming days and weeks, as Israel continues its newly launched campaign on Iranian nuclear and military sites, Ravid says. If Fordo survives Israeli airstrikes, Iran’s nuclear infrastructure will remain intact, says Ravid, adding that Tehran could even relocate the rest of its nuclear program to the facility, placing it beyond Israel’s reach and accelerating its path to a nuclear weapon.

According to the semi-official ISNA news agency, Iran confirmed that the Fordo site sustained limited damage from the recent Israeli attacks.

Non-essential Knesset meetings canceled this week due to Iran conflict

Following consultations with Knesset security and the opposition, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana announces that all Knesset committee meetings not essential for the current conflict with Iran will be canceled.

In addition, all Knesset employees who are not considered essential will switch to remote work, and all planned visitor groups and tours will be canceled. Access to the plenum will be restricted, and lawmakers who still wish to attend will be asked to limit the number of advisors they bring along.

Reporters are asked to go through the Knesset spokesman before going, and another situational assessment will be held on Sunday to decide on how to go forward for the rest of the week, the Knesset announces.

US President Donald Trump says both he and Russian President Vladimir Putin feel the Israel-Iran war “should end,” in a post on the Truth Social site.

“President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well,” Trump writes.

“We talked at length. Much less time was spent talking about Russia/Ukraine, but that will be for next week. He is doing the planned prisoner swaps — large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides. The call lasted approximately 1 hour. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end.”

Ex-PM Bennett says war against Iran aims to ‘save the free world’

Israel launched its war against Iran to “save the free world,” asserts former prime minister Naftali Bennett, posting a video and a series of images highlighting Iran-backed terror attacks around the world.

“Israel is saving the world from a nuclear Iran,” he tweets in English before switching to Hebrew to add that he had “prepared some ammunition that you can distribute on the world’s networks against complaints about Israel and demands for us to ‘de-escalate.'”

“Let it be clear: Israel is doing the dirty work that no one else was willing to do, and the whole world will benefit from it,” he writes.

Pushing back against right-wing “America first” supporters who argue the US shouldn’t back Israel against its enemies, US President Donald Trump says stopping the Iranian nuclear program is a prerequisite for peace.

“For those people who say they want peace — you can’t have peace if Iran has a nuclear weapon,” he tells the Atlantic. “So for all of those wonderful people who don’t want to do anything about Iran having a nuclear weapon — that’s not peace.”

Preventing Iran from having a nuclear weapon is a vital US interest, he says.

“Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb, very simple,” argues Trump. “Regardless—Israel or not Israel — Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb.”

Trump argues that Iran “still wants to make a deal” over its nuclear program despite the Israeli attacks.

He also expresses optimism that the war against Hamas in Gaza is nearing its end: “Gaza is ready to fold — or just about ready to fold. We have gotten many of the hostages back.”

Far-right deputy minister calls on Iranians to ‘rise up’ against regime

Following Israel’s attack on Tehran’s nuclear program, Israel’s Deputy Minister Almog Cohen calls on the Iranian people to “rise up” against their government.

“Overthrow the Ayatollah regime — those who drown in wine and wealth, while using your beautiful nation to fund global-terror,” the far-right politician tweets alongside a cartoon of an Iranian lion kicking the symbol of the current regime off the country’s national flag.

“Freedom is yours—take it!”

“The scale of destruction is vast… Our hearts are with the families and civilians who were harmed,” Levy says in a statement, praising civilians’ discipline in adhering to the Home Front Command’s safety guidelines, which “undoubtedly prevented the loss of more lives.”

Levy also saluted the police officers who helped rescue victims trapped under rubble in the wake of the Iranian missile barrages.

The police chief was accompanied by Tel Aviv District Commander Haim Sargarof, who briefed him on law enforcement’s activity at the impact sites.

A police spokesman says bomb disposal specialists are still working to rule out the presence of explosive material in the residential areas struck by Iranian missiles overnight in Rishon Lezion and Ramat Gan.

News agency Tasnim says air defenses were responding to “hostile targets” over Tehran and in the provinces of Hormozgan in the country’s south, Kermanshah and Lorestan in the west, Qom in the center, East Azerbaijan in the northwest, and Khuzestan in the southwest. Herzog calls on world leaders to back Israel in fight against ‘terrorist jihad’

President Isaac Herzog calls on world leaders to support Israel “in an uncompromising manner” as it fights against Iran.

“We are at a historic crossroads, for the entire Middle East — between a terrorist jihad that seeks to dominate the region and a horizon of partnership and peace, of the day after,” he says in a video address. “This is not our war alone, but of all those who seek a common future in our region.”

He stresses that the Iranian regime “has worked against us for generations, to kill us. It has worked to create global and regional terrorism, to spread antisemitism and hatred of Israel, and above all – to develop nuclear weapons — in order to realize its ambition to destroy Israel.”

He argues that the world knows “that nuclear weapons in the hands of a murderous ideology are a threat to humanity.”

Herzog returns to the theme he has prioritized throughout his tenure — national unity.

He calls on Israelis “to reach out and strengthen each other, to be considerate, to listen, to support — physically and emotionally, to enhance personal, community and national resilience — in Israel and in the Diaspora. To maintain Israeli cohesion. At this historic time, we must under no circumstances return to steps that tear us apart from within.”

Shas chairman Aryeh Deri and Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein were informed of this weekend’s strikes on Iran ahead of time, Channel 12 journalist Amit Segal reports.

According to Segal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “signed a written order to advance the plan” to strike Iran shortly after US President Donald Trump’s election in November 2024, leading to months of talks to secure Washington’s permission to go ahead with the attack.

“The heads of the ultra-Orthodox parties, with the exception of Deri, knew nothing about the attack while they threatened to dissolve the government,” Segal tweets, adding that Edelstein “also knew about what was brewing, and this helped bring about a compromise, knowing what was going to happen within a day.”

Asked by The Times of Israel, the spokesman for Edelstein confirms the report.

Police nab Palestinian who livestreamed Iran missile attack with music promoting incitement

Jerusalem police arrested a Palestinian after he livestreamed Iran’s missile attack on Israel last night while playing a Shi’ite devotional song in the video’s background.

The man, a resident of Silwan in his 20s, was detained for questioning by police earlier today.

Police say the young man “broadcasted a song promoting incitement and expressing praise for the missile fire launched from Iran” during his livestream of last night’s barrage while he was in the Old City.

The song in question appears to be the Persian-language ballad “Haidar, Haidar” in praise of the Islamic caliph Ali, whom Shi’ite Muslims view as the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad.

A spokesman for the police says law enforcement is “actively working to combat incitement and violence on social media” as part of their “heightened operational readiness” amid war with Iran.

Azerbaijani FM tells Iranian counterpart it won’t allow Israel to use territory for strikes

BAKU, Azerbaijan — Azerbaijan reassures neighboring Iran that it would not allow its territory to be used for attacks against Tehran, following unprecedented Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.

Iran has long expressed concern that Israel — a close ally of Azerbaijan and a key arms supplier — could use Azerbaijani territory to stage attacks.

“Azerbaijan will never allow its territory to be used for attacks on third countries, including friendly Iran,” Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov tells his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

In a phone call with Araghchi, Bayramov warned that the “conflict risked engulfing the broader region,” and called for “diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation,” the Azerbaijani foreign ministry press service tells AFP.

The ministry adds that Azerbaijan had facilitated land transit across its border after Iran closed its airspace in response to the Israeli strikes.

From Tehran, “the murderous terror regime is managed, which poses a threat to the entire Western world,” he says. “Tehran is no longer immune.”

The strike had resulted in a fire, which the Iranian oil ministry said was later extinguished.

The giant South Pars field, located in the southern Bushehr province, is one of Iran’s two main hydrocarbon production facilities.

Shmuel Zakai, the head of the Civil Aviation Authority, says it will take weeks before all Israelis stranded abroad will be able to fly home, as Israel’s airspace remains closed amid strikes on Iran.

He says Israeli airlines moved their entire flights out of Israel at the very start of the war, in a complex operation that the CAA had planned well in advance, and that the planes are located at airports as close as possible to where Israelis are right now.

But flights cannot be resumed until the security establishment assessment allows, says Zakai.

“We won’t restart airport operations at a full pace, it will be slow, in stages, and it may cease for certain periods. The first goal is to prevent harm to people and planes,” he says.

“I want to say to Israelis abroad: It will take weeks — not days or hours — weeks until many of them are back home.”

Shmuel Zakai (GPO)

Asked if he really means weeks, he says Israel is in the midst of “a historic event, a war,” and that “we shouldn’t create illusions.”

Zakai says this scenario was known to key people ahead of the war, but indicates that Israel could not tell its citizens not to fly overseas because a preemptive war was imminent, and they might get stuck there.

Some 50,000 Israelis are believed to be stuck overseas, and the IDF’s spokesman said earlier today that it was constantly assessing the situation.

In some past conflicts, Israelis have been advised to get to Larnaca or Athens, where Israeli flights would fetch them as soon as possible, but no such official advice has been issued this time.

The senior officer says that “all the scientists eliminated in the opening strike had, over the years, been involved in developing the nuclear detonation device.”

“We also hit the team of senior scientists who are leading these projects,” he says in a video statement, saying that strikes have delayed Iran’s nuclear program for several years.

“There is also a major threat from the ballistic missiles,” he adds, casting the projectiles as another method Iran means to use to eliminate Israel. He says Israel is eliminating their ability to produce such weapons..

“Very soon, you will see IAF planes above Tehran’s skies. We will hit every target of the ayatollahs’ regime,” Netanyahu states, adding the strikes carried out so far are nothing compared to what will be experienced in the coming days.

“I am shaken by the news that our consul and his wife were injured in the attack on Tel Aviv. The building they live in was hit,” he says on X, formerly Twitter.

“I spoke with them and, fortunately, their injuries are minor and they are not in any life-threatening condition.”

Grlic Radman adds that his ministry was in constant contact with the Croatian Embassy in Israel and was taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its staff.

“We strongly condemn attacks on civilians and diplomatic facilities. We call for immediate de-escalation and restraint,” Grlic Radman says.

IDF says it struck ballistic missile launcher ready to fire in western Iran

The Israeli Air Force struck a primed ballistic missile launcher in western Iran, the IDF says, attaching a video of the strike.

The missile launcher was spotted by an IAF aircraft flying over Iran, and it was struck a short while later, according to the IDF.

Dozens of ballistic missile launchers have been destroyed so far in Israeli strikes, the military says.

The military said that it has “established aerial superiority from western Iran to Tehran,” following an overnight IAF operation, during which dozens of air defense systems were struck.

The IDF Home Front Command has analyzed the major Iranian ballistic missile impacts in civilian areas overnight and this morning, finding that those who were in bomb shelters were largely unharmed.

Some 200 missiles were fired by Iran at Israel in four main waves. The IDF said that 50 were not intercepted “according to protocol” as they were set to hit open areas, and a “small number” breached air defenses.

Missile strikes in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Rishon Lezion in central Israel killed three civilians and wounded some 80. Seven soldiers were also lightly wounded by one impact in central Israel.

The Home Front Command says that in the case of a high-rise tower in Tel Aviv, the missile struck the 9th floor, destroying several apartments, but the bomb safe rooms sustained the impact, and hundreds of civilians were unharmed or only lightly hurt.

In Ramat Gan, a relatively old home without a bomb safe room was directly hit by a missile. However, those who entered a basement under the building were unharmed.

The Home Front Command calls on civilians to head for the safest place possible amid Iran’s missile attacks.

The missiles carry warheads of hundreds of kilograms of explosives, and are considered to be a much greater threat than the drones launched by Iran, which are mostly intercepted before reaching Israel.

Meanwhile, the Home Front Command says it has called up its entire reserve personnel, with tens of thousands of troops deployed across the country ready to respond to missile impacts.

The IDF announces that the chiefs of Iran’s military intelligence and the IRGC’s ballistic missile array were killed in recent strikes.

In all, some 20 top military Iranian commanders have been killed since Israel launched its operation against Iran on Friday, the IDF says.

Gholam-Reza Marhabi, head of the intelligence department of the Iranian Armed Forces, was killed in Israel’s opening strikes early Friday, the IDF says.

The IDF says he “was responsible for intelligence situational assessments for the Iranian Armed Forces and was considered Iran’s most senior intelligence officer.”

“Marhabi played a key role in intelligence evaluations, operational planning, and combat preparations against Israel in the past year and before,” the military says, adding that he was a “highly respected senior figure within the regime’s security organization and a close associate of” Mohammad Bagheri, the Armed Forces chief of staff who was also killed on Friday.

Additionally, the IDF says a strike on Friday killed “the commander of the IRGC’s Surface-To-Surface Missile Array, Mohammad Bagheri.”

The IDF says Bagheri “oversaw most of Iran’s long-range surface-to-surface and cruise missile capabilities.”

Bagheri was killed alongside the commander of the IRGC air force and other top commanders in the unit while meeting at an underground command center to prepare to attack Israel, according to the IDF.

Iran seriously miscalculated in the lead-up to Israel’s strikes on Friday, believing that it would never have attacked before a round of nuclear talks with the United States scheduled for Sunday, officials close to Iran’s leadership tell The New York Times.

Due to this miscalculation, Iran’s top military commanders did not seek shelter and ignored recommendations not to congregate in a single area, the officials say.

Israel eliminated most of Iran’s top military brass at an emergency meeting in the opening strikes early Friday morning.

According to private texts shared with The Times, Iranian officials angrily asked: “Where is our air defense?” and “How can Israel come and attack anything it wants, kill our top commanders, and we are incapable of stopping it?”

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Baghdad has asked Tehran not to target US interests on Iraqi soil, a senior security official says.

The government in Baghdad is a close ally of Tehran but also a strategic partner of Iran’s arch-foe, the United States, which has some 2,500 troops in Iraq as part of an anti-jihadist coalition.

Fearing being caught up in a regional escalation, the Iraqi government asked Tehran not to strike in its territory, a senior Iraqi security official tells AFP.

“The request was made. They promised us positive things,” the official says, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

The official adds that Tehran has shown understanding with regard to Baghdad’s request.

IDF Home Front Command set to alter warning times for Iranian attacks

The IDF Home Front Command is set to adjust the warning times it gives to civilians for Iranian ballistic missile attacks, as it assesses further barrages may resume in the evening.

The Home Front Command says it will issue a warning on its app some 15-30 minutes before an expected attack, instructing civilians to remain close to bomb shelters. This should assist those without bomb safe rooms in their homes to head for public shelters.

As missiles are detected being launched, the Home Front Command will give an early warning on its app and use the cell broadcast system to instruct civilians to enter bomb shelters. This will give civilians some 10 minutes to seek shelter.

Sirens will sound 90 seconds before missiles are expected to impact. Once sirens sound, civilians are instructed to immediately enter bomb shelters and remain there until further notice.

Once the barrage is believed to be over, the Home Front Command will issue an update allowing civilians to leave the bomb shelters, and the process will repeat if another attack is expected.

France is boosting security, including around Jewish and US sites on its territory, amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the interior minister says in a domestic order.

“Special vigilance” must be given “to all sites that could be targeted by terrorist or malicious acts by a foreign power,” Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau says in a dispatch to French regional security chiefs that was seen by AFP.

He says security should be heightened around “places of worship, schools, state and institutional buildings, sites with high traffic,” including “festive, cultural or religious gatherings.”

The order also applies to “Israeli and US interests as well as to establishments in the Jewish community.”

France is home to the biggest Jewish community in Europe.

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin says over 70 Israeli Air Force fighter jets participated in the overnight operation in Tehran to achieve aerial freedom of action over the Iranian capital.

He says some 40 sites were targeted, including air defense systems and related assets.

IAF fighter jets and drones flew over Tehran for some two and a half hours during the operation, Defrin says.

“The dozens of aircraft are flying freely over Tehran, thanks to the opening blow that removed the threat of Iranian air defense systems,” he says.

Defrin says it is the deepest area in Iran that the IAF has operated in so far.

“Tehran is no longer immune; the capital is exposed to Israeli strikes,” he adds.

The Israeli Air Force has not yet struck all of Iran’s nuclear facilities, but these efforts will continue while the military also works to degrade the country’s ballistic missile array, military officials say.

So far, the IAF has caused “significant damage” to the Natanz nuclear facility and destroyed some sections of the Isfahan site, according to the IDF. The IAF has not yet targeted Fordo.

Nine nuclear scientists were also killed in Israeli strikes on Friday.

Air force ready for sudden escalation, but says operation against Iran ‘advancing according to plan’

The Israeli Air Force says its operation against Iran is “advancing according to the plan” and “working well” so far.

Still, the IAF says it is preparing for a sudden further escalation with Iran.

Meanwhile, the IAF says it can now fly over Tehran with fighter jets, which it says is “significant.”

The IAF also says it is working to disrupt attempts by Iran to launch massive ballistic missile barrages on Israel, with fighter jets flying over the launch sites. As time goes on, Iran’s ability to launch missiles at Israel will be slowly degraded, the IAF says.

The military releases footage showing the identification of Iranian ballistic missile launchers in Tehran, shortly before they were targeted.

Gazan medics: At least 15 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire near aid center; no comment from IDF

Medics at Al-Awda and Al-Aqsa Hospitals in central Gaza areas say at least 15 people were killed by Israeli fire as they tried to approach the Israeli- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid distribution site near the Netzarim corridor.

The toll cannot be independently verified. There is no immediate comment from the IDF or the GHF.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry says in a statement that at least 274 people have so far been killed, and more than 2,000 wounded, near aid distribution sites since the GHF began operations in the Strip.

It is unclear at what time the reported shooting near the Netzarim Corridor took place. Earlier this month, the IDF warned Palestinians not to approach routes leading to Gaza Humanitarian Foundation sites between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. local time, describing these roads as closed military zones. However, the GHF has indicated it may be open during those hours.

The GHF has faced heavy scrutiny from other aid bodies, as well as the UN and foreign countries, which say that it does not sufficiently address the humanitarian needs in the war-torn Palestinian enclave.

Critics have also accused GHF of putting aid seekers in harm’s way, with operations beset by deadly incidents for multiple days in a row.

Israel says the mechanism is required to keep aid out of the hands of Hamas.

Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy says he is “alarmed” by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

“Alarmed by further strikes in the Middle East overnight, with reports of fatalities and injuries in Israel. We must urgently de-escalate & prevent any further harm to civilians,” Lammy says on X, formerly Twitter, adding that he had spoken to his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi “to urge calm.”

Three civilians were killed and 70 wounded in ballistic missile barrages fired by Iran at Israel. Tehran has not given an updated death toll in the Israeli strikes targeting its military and nuclear infrastructure.

According to London’s The Times, the UK was not informed about Israel’s initial strikes on Iran in advance, amid deteriorating ties between the two countries.

Etti Cohen Engel is the second to be named of the three people killed in massive barrages of Iranian ballistic missile fire last night and early this morning.

Engel was killed in the missile attack that hit the central city of Ramat Gan last night.

Earlier today, it was announced that Yisrael Aloni, 73, was killed in a barrage on the central city of Rishon Lezion. Another person who has not yet been publicly named was killed in the same barrage.

In addition to the three people killed, some 70 people were wounded by the approximately 200 ballistic missiles fired from Iran.

Most of the missiles were intercepted by air defenses. The military said that around 25%, less than 50, were not intercepted “according to protocol,” meaning they were left to strike open areas without causing damage to any critical infrastructure.

A “small number” of missiles made it through air defenses, the IDF said, including in residential areas in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Rishon Lezion in central Israel.

The IDF names the nine Iranian nuclear scientists it assassinated in the opening strikes of its operation against Iran’s nuclear program early Friday, and details the efforts to kill them.

The military says these scientists had advanced efforts by Iran to obtain a nuclear bomb.

The nine are named as: Fereydoon Abbasi, expert in nuclear engineering; Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, expert in physics; Akbar Motalebi Zadeh, expert in chemical engineering; Saeed Barji, expert in materials engineering; Amir Hassan Fakhahi, expert in physics; Abd al-Hamid Minoushehr, expert in reactor physics; Mansour Asgari, expert in physics; Ahmad Reza Zolfaghari Daryani, expert in nuclear engineering; and Ali Bakhouei Katirimi, expert in mechanics.

“All the scientists and experts who were eliminated were significant sources of knowledge in the Iranian nuclear project, and had decades of cumulative experience in the development of nuclear weapons,” the IDF says.

It says that many of them were successors to Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the “father of the Iranian nuclear project,” who was allegedly assassinated by Israel in 2020.

According to the military, the nine were killed in simultaneous strikes on Tehran early Friday, in the same wave of attacks that eliminated dozens of military commanders, including six top officials.

“The elimination of the scientists was made possible following in-depth intelligence research that intensified over the past year, as part of a classified and compartmentalized IDF plan,” the military says.

As part of the plan, the IDF says dozens of intelligence researchers “worked on a secret project aimed at tracking key nuclear scientists in Iran over the course of several years.”

Leo, in one of the strongest peace appeals yet of his five-week papacy, tells an audience in St. Peter’s Basilica he is following the situation with “great concern.”

“In such a delicate moment, I strongly wish to renew an appeal to responsibility and to reason,” says the pope.

“The commitment to building a safer world free from the nuclear threat must be pursued through respectful encounters and sincere dialogue to build a lasting peace, founded on justice, fraternity, and the common good,” he says.

“No one should ever threaten the existence of another,” says Leo. “It is the duty of all countries to support the cause of peace, initiating paths of reconciliation and promoting solutions that guarantee security and dignity for all.”

Reports of fresh Israeli strikes in Iranian cities housing key defense facilities; 2 killed at missile site in western Iran

Iran reportedly arrests 5 in Yazd, accusing them of ‘collaborating with Israel’

Iran has arrested five people in central city of Yazd for taking pictures and “collaborating with Israel,” Iranian news sites report.

The arrests were made as Iran and Israel continue to target each other after Israel launched its biggest-ever offensive against its longtime foe in a bid to prevent Tehran, which frequently calls for Israel’s destruction, from developing a nuclear weapon.

Iran often arrests people it accuses of spying for Israel, usually without producing evidence to back up the allegations.

Defense Minister Israel Katz warns Iran’s leader, Ali Khamenei, that if missiles continue to be fired at Israel, “Tehran will burn.”

“The Iranian dictator is turning the citizens of Iran into hostages and creating a reality in which they, especially the residents of Tehran, will pay a heavy price for the criminal attack on Israeli civilians,” Katz says during an assessment with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Mossad director David Barnea, and other top military officials.

“If Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn,” Katz warns.

The IDF denies striking Iran’s Fordo nuclear facility, after Iranian state media said yesterday that there had been “limited damage” to the site following an Israeli attack.

The reason for the competing claims was unclear.

Meanwhile, the military says that its strike on the Isfahan nuclear site destroyed several critical sections, including uranium conversion infrastructure and labs.

The strike was launched after the military says it identified efforts by Iran to enrich weapons-grade uranium at Isfahan.

The activity at Isfahan “leaves no room for doubt, Iran was working to produce weapons of mass destruction,” the military says.

The IDF says it continues to strike in Iran, and its next step is to “operate freely over Tehran.”

A series of strikes overnight took out air defense systems, and this morning, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said that “the way to Tehran has been paved.”

The military publishes footage of those strikes.

The strikes will continue to target Iranian nuclear facilities, military sites, and ballistic missile launchers, as well as military officials and nuclear scientists, the IDF says.

Over 150 targets have been struck thus far, since the beginning of Israel’s operation early Friday.

Iran has fired some 200 ballistic missiles at Israel in several barrages since last night, according to the IDF.

Most of the missiles were intercepted by air defenses. The military says that around 25%, less than 50, were not intercepted “according to protocol,” allowing them to strike open areas without causing damage to any critical infrastructure.

A “small number” of missiles made it through air defenses, the IDF says, and caused casualties and damage, including in residential areas in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan and Rishon Lezion in central Israel.

Three Israelis were killed and some 70 were wounded in the missile impacts.

The military says that all of its bases, including air bases, are operating as usual with no harm to their functionality.

Several drones fired at Israel overnight were also shot down by the Israeli Air Force and Navy. This comes after 100 drones fired by Iran on Friday were also intercepted.

Iran announces airspace closed ‘until further notice’

Iran’s civil aviation authority has declared the country’s airspace closed “until further notice,” state media reports, as Israel and Iran continued to trade fire for a second day.

‘The way to Tehran has been paved’: IDF chiefs say Air Force to begin operating freely over Iranian capital

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Israeli Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar say in a published assessment this morning that “the way to Tehran has been paved.”

“According to the plans, air force fighter jets will begin to carry out strikes on targets in Tehran,” the military adds.

The statement comes after the military said that last night IAF jets struck air defense systems in Tehran, enabling the military more freedom of aerial action above the Iranian capital.
