Livni calls for more legislative transparency

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni on Sunday called for more transparency in government legislative decisions, saying the results of votes in the Ministerial Legislation Committee should be made public.

The committee, tasked with reviewing legislative bills presented to the Knesset and formulating government policy on those suggestions, is headed by the justice minister. Currently, voting on the bills is kept secret, with the Justice Ministry publishing only the results of the votes and not how each individual minister voted.

“I think it’s right to have transparency in the committee,” Livni said. The ministers on the committee deal with “proposed bills that affect the lives of us all and aren’t state secrets.”
