Madonna’s former dancers strike a pose

A documentary about the performers in the pop star's iconic 1990 tour will be screened at DocAviv, accompanied by two of the subjects

Madonna’s 1990 Blond Ambition tour was seen as a seminal cultural event that changed the way people thought about pop music, performance, and perhaps most importantly, gay rights, given the seven dancers — six gay men and one straight man — who surrounded Madonna at the time.

That tour gave way to a documentary, “Madonna: Truth or Dare,” chronicling Madonna at the time.

Now another documentary, “Strike A Pose,” telling the story of the the seven dancers who accompanied Madonna, will be screened as part of Tel Aviv’s DocAviv Festival, with two of the dancers, Salim Gauwloos and Kevin Stea, in Israel to attend and participate in the screenings.

The 2015 film, made by two Dutch filmmakers, shows what happened to the dancers after the tour that took place 25 years earlier, tracing their accomplishments as well as the difficulties they faced after the glories of celebrityhood had worn off.

The film was screened at the Tribeca and Berlinale film festivals, and will be shown at DocAviv on May 21, 27-28, and later on cable television channel HOT 8.
