Man charged over synagogue herring stabbing
Stabber said to have been intoxicated during altercation after Shabbat service in Melbourne; victim still hospitalized in serious condition
A Jewish man has been charged by Victorian police following a stabbing incident in a Melbourne synagogue last week, reportedly in a dispute over herring.
An argument between two men over either cake or herring resulting in a man in his 20s being stabbed in the abdomen following the Saturday morning service at the Rambam Sephardi Synagogue in Hotham Street.
The victim is currently hospitalized in The Alfred hospital in Melbourne in serious condition and apparently is known to his attacker, who fled the synagogue.
The Community Security Group has issued a report stating that the offender was intoxicated. All streets in the area where the synagogue is located were placed on lockdown until the alleged stabber was apprehended.
A police spokesperson told JTA: “Police have arrested a 46-year-old man following a stabbing in Hotham Street, St Kilda East on Saturday.”
The alleged stabber was arrested and taken in to police for questioning. He was charged with intention to cause serious injury and assault with a weapon.
He was released on bail and scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates court on September 23.
