Teenager dies after falling into Temple Mount dig
Palestinian killed as holy site sees large crowds for Muslim holiday; police do not suspect foul play
A Palestinian teen was killed after falling into an archaeological dig on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem Monday morning.
The young man apparently fell some 30 meters (100 feet) into the dig.
Sunday night and Monday morning saw hundreds of thousands of Muslims flock to the holy site to mark Lailat al Qadr, which in Muslim tradition commemorates the revelation of the Koran to the prophet Muhammad.
Paramedics on the scene attempted to resuscitate the teenager, and he was taken to a Jerusalem hospital where he was declared dead.
Police sources said that the youngster’s death was an accident and do not suspect foul play.
Large crowds are expected at the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa mosque over the next few days as Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
