Man falls to death while rappelling in Ramon crater
Police detain instructor after Arad resident, 22, falls off cliff when harness apparently unsecured
A 22-year-old man was killed Thursday when he slipped and fell off a cliff while on a rappelling trip in southern Israel.
Dvir Fayena, of Arad, was preparing to climb down a cliff near Mitzpeh Ramon, a popular rappelling spot on the edge of the Ramon crater in the Negev desert, when he fell to his death.
Paramedics said Fayena was dead by the time they got to the scene.
Police opened an investigation into the death and detained a rappelling instructor who was with Fayena at the time for questioning.
According to the Ynet news website, Fayena, who had experience climbing, was wearing a harness, but was not hooked into the rappelling rope. As he was walking backward, he slipped and fell off the cliff.
Featuring sheer cliffs dropping several hundred feet in places, the massive depression known as the Ramon crater is among the country’s most popular rappelling spots.
