Man in Bnei Brak arrested on suspicion of killing his mother
65-year-old woman stabbed to death at home in the central Israeli city; police said probing suspect's mental health history
A man was arrested Saturday in Bnei Brak on suspicion of stabbing his mother to death.
The woman, who the Magen David Adom ambulance service said was 65, was killed at her home in the central Israeli city.
Police said a 32-year-old had been arrested for the stabbing and an officer later identified the suspect as the woman’s son.
“Her son was apparently in a conflict with her. He is being investigated right now,” Chief Superintendent Yair Weinberger, who heads a police station in Bnei Brak, told reporters.
Weinberger said the suspect was at the apartment when he was arrested.
An investigation has been opened into the killing, with the Ynet news site reporting that police are looking into the suspect’s mental health history.
Acquaintances of the family and neighbors said the mother and son would often fight.
“He wasn’t alright in the head,” a worshiper at a nearby synagogue in the heavily ultra-Orthodox city told Ynet. “He lived with his mother and they would fight. To the best of my knowledge he received mental treatment.”
A man who knew the son expressed shock over the killing and said he recently moved back home after trying to live on his own in Hadera for a few weeks.
“I don’t know what to say. He loved her, how does something like this happen,” the acquaintance said.
The suspect is expected to be brought before a court later Saturday for a remand hearing.
