Man killed after car crashes, bursts into flames during Haifa police chase
Five arrested after police pursuit of vehicle driving 'erratically,' against traffic flow, ends in collision with street light
A man was killed and five people arrested after a car crashed and burst into flames during a police chase in the northern city of Haifa.
Police said in a statement that officers identified the vehicle traveling erratically and against the flow of the traffic in the early hours of the morning.
A checkpoint set up to stop the car failed to halt its progress and the chase continued until the car crashed into a street light pole and caught fire.
A number of people escaped from the vehicle but one person was killed.
Police said the man’s body was “found near the vehicle.”
Hebrew-language media reports said he was a passenger in the car and Channel 13 news named him as Ramadan Adel Halaf, 20, from the Bedouin town of Basmat Tab’un.
Four of those arrested were in their 20s and one was a minor aged 17, police said. All were also from Basmat Tab’un.
