A man was seriously injured on Wednesday when the car he was in exploded in the northern town of Ness Ziona.

The explosion happened as the car was stopped at a traffic light on Haminyan Harishon Street.

MDA paramedics treated the victim, 40, at the scene and then took him to Tel Hashomer hospital.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear, but indications pointed to the bombing being related to the criminal underworld rather than a terror attack.

Car bombings are a signature gangland style assassination method in Israel and police are engaged in a major operation to crack down on organized crime in the country, involving dozens of arrests and indictments linked to past car bombings.
