Attacker shouts ‘I want to kill a Muslim‘ and ‘go back to Syria‘; police treating attack as a 'hate crime,' but not terrorism
An Asian man was stabbed on a London train Monday afternoon by another man who was shouting that he wanted to kill a Muslim, British media reported.
Witnesses said the attacker walked through the moving overland train shouting, “Go back to Syria” and, “Muslims…kill them all,” while looking for a victim, witnesses said.
While British Transport Police said they were treating the incident as a “serious hate crime,” they said there was “no suggestion of wider terrorist aspect.”
The attacker, 38, also allegedly shouted, “I wanna kill me a Muslim.” Spotting a Muslim woman wearing a hijab, he reportedly said, “‘I don’t want me a Muslim woman, I want me a Muslim man.”
After the stabbing, he got off at Forest Hill station, still shouting, according to a witness.
The victim, in his 40s, sustained serious injuries to his face and chest, but was not in mortal danger, police said.
In August, British police charged a 19-year-old Somali-Norwegian man with carrying out a stabbing rampage in London’s Russell Square that killed an American woman and injured five others.
Police initially considered the stabbings a potential terrorist attack. The rampage came just days after police warned Londoners to be vigilant, and hours after the force said it was putting more armed officers on the streets to bolster public confidence after a summer of attacks elsewhere in Europe.
But within hours of Bulhan’s arrest police said they had found no evidence of radicalization or links to terrorism.
