Meretz says it has ‘new initiative’ for resuming peace talks
Zehava Gal-on urges PM to recognize Palestinian statehood
Meretz chairwoman Zahava Gal-on on Thursday said her party had formulated a new political initiative, aimed to enable a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
The initiative, she said, was “aimed to replace the Oslo accords and set in motion the political process, based on the agreements made so far, to be implemented as a five-year plan.”
Speaking before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, she urged him to use the speech to recognize Palestinian statehood.
“Time is running out and the window of opportunity for a two-state solution is closing,” Maariv quoted Gal-On as saying. “A Palestinian state alongside Israel is in Israel’s strategic interests, and it is the only practical solution that is still grounded in reality.”
Gal-on also called Netanyahu to offer political assistance to the Palestinian Authority in its quest to complete its admission as the 194th member of the UN.
