Miri Regev forgets to renew site domain, pays the price

Bloggers take over miri-regev.com, turning it into a virtual game that allows you to chase after the culture minister with a Chekhov book

Miri Regev failed to renew the domain of her personal website (miri-regev.com), so as of Monday visitors who came to the page encountered a video game that allows them to chase after the culture minister with an Anton Chekhov book.

Creators of the blog “I can has falafel” (an Israelified parody of the cat-centric online meme “I can has cheezburger”) noticed that the domain shown on Regev’s Facebook page had become available for purchase and took advantage of the lapse to create “Catch Miri.”

The simple game requires the user to scroll the mouse over the face of the culture minister. However, if the cursor (Chekhov’s book) gets too close to Regev’s head, the culture minister slides in the opposite direction.

The choice of novel had to do with comments made by Regev in a 2015 interview, in which she said, ““I, Miri Regev-Siboni from Kiryat Gat, daughter of Felix and Marcelle Siboni, have never read Chekhov and almost never went to plays as a child…But I’m no less cultured than all the consumers of Western culture.”

According to internet archives, the site had previously been used from 2015 to 2016 to promote the minister’s political activities in addition to recruiting volunteers for her political campaigns.

The domain posted on her Facebook page has since been updated (miri-regev.co.il), but the revised site is largely empty. Its most recent news post is from 2014.
