Netflix buys German comedy about Hitler in modern day
'Look Who's Back,' based on a best-selling book, follows the Nazi leader as he struggles to navigate today's Berlin
The Netflix streaming service has acquired German comedy film “Look Who’s Back,” which follows Adolf Hitler as he struggles to find work in modern-day Germany.
The movie is based on Timur Vermes’s bestselling novel of the same name, which has been published in over 40 countries. Netflix will begin rolling out the film on April 9.
Directed by David Wnendt, the potentially controversial film proved a huge hit as it follows star Oliver Masucci in Nazi costume, Hitler hairstyle and mustache around the streets of Berlin. The movie finds the Nazi leader in modern-day Germany with no memory of events prior to 1945.
The movie shows Hitler suddenly waking up at the site of what was once his notorious bunker 70 years after he is believed to have killed himself. With no recollection of WWII, but with the same philosophies, Hitler finds himself mistaken for a comedian and embarks on a new career in television.
Having grossed around $22 million since opening in October, the film drops Hitler into various real-life situations, including conducting a Google search for “world domination,” dropping his uniform off at the dry cleaner and encountering an electric cattle fence.
