New world record: Largest sock mosaic
Two artists, one city square and 12,000 socks
A mosaic made of 12,000 socks helped the city of Netanya enter the Guinness World Records, the municipality announced late Tuesday.
The project was led by two local artists who had decided to make a piece of art that would involve as many people as possible. Given that goal, they said, “we knew that we needed to use household materials.”
Residents of the city were asked by the municipality to bring socks for the project. “Make sure they are clean,” was an important part of the request.
The socks were used to build a large mosaic in a Netanya city square. The project was undertaken as part of the city’s cooperation with the Italian city of Verona, considered by many to be the mosaic capital of the world.
The world record was registered as “the largest sock mosaic,” handily breaking the previous record of a Japanese mosaic which had used 4,000 socks.
Anat Shamai, one of the artists, was very pleased with the result. The town will go down in history thanks to something “good and funny,” she said. It’s a project that “contributed educationally to society.”
